South African Police Service (SAPS) is the national police force of the Republic of South Africa, tasked with preventing, combating, and investigating crime; maintaining public order; protecting and securing South African citizens and property; and upholding and enforcing the law. SAPS operates under the authority of the Department of Police and is governed by the Constitution of South Africa, particularly Section 205. SAPS is a government agency operating within the public safety and law enforcement industry. It maintains police stations and specialized units across all nine provinces, and works closely with communities, national departments, and international bodies to combat organized crime, domestic violence, drug trafficking, corruption, and other public threats. As one of the largest public service employers in the country, SAPS provides various career paths in areas such as policing, forensics, crime intelligence, administration, and specialized tactical units.
