Job Description
The Mpumalanga Department of Health is inviting applications for the Environmental Health Practitioner Grade 1 position at Mapulaneng Hospital in the Ehlanzeni District.
This opportunity is suited to a qualified environmental health practitioner who can support hospital environmental health functions, waste management, occupational hygiene, food control, disease surveillance, and environmental risk monitoring.
The successful candidate will help ensure compliance with environmental health standards, monitor key indicators, support outbreak response activities, and provide reports to management.
Responsibilities
- Manage waste handling and monitoring of general waste and health care risk waste.
- Support Safety Health Environment Risk and Quality (SHERQ) management.
- Conduct waste quality monitoring, including collection of water samples and analysis of results.
- Carry out food control activities, including food sample collection, inspection of food premises, and training of staff.
- Coordinate vector control within the facility, including organising pest control programmes.
- Participate in disease surveillance.
- Form part of the outbreak response team.
- Investigate outbreaks and liaise with relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor environmental health indicators and provide reports to management.
- Support pollution control.
- Promote environmental health hygiene.
- Conduct occupational hygiene surveillance.
Requirements
- Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the relevant profession, where applicable, in 2026.
- Valid driver’s licence.
Grade 1 Experience Requirement
South African qualified employees
- No experience required after registration with the HPCSA in the relevant profession where community service was required in South Africa.
Foreign qualified employees
- Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA in the relevant profession where community service is not required in South Africa.
