The Mpumalanga Department of Health is inviting applications for the Medical Specialist Grade 1: Anaesthesiology position at Ermelo Regional Hospital in the Gert Sibande District.

This opportunity is suited to a qualified medical specialist in Anaesthesiology who can provide high-quality specialist care, support hospital objectives, coordinate anaesthesiology services, and contribute to training, audits, and clinical governance.

The successful candidate will supervise and manage anaesthesiology services, support patient care standards, assist with protocols and guidelines, and contribute to academic and continuous professional development activities.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and manage Anaesthesiology services.
• Coordinate Anaesthesiology services.
• Execute duties and functions with proficiency in support of the institution’s aims and objectives.
• Maintain standards of patient care.
• Accept responsibility for the management of patients admitted in a level 2 or level 3 package of service facility.
• Assist in the preparation and implementation of guidelines and protocols.
• Participate in academic and training programmes.
• Assist with clinical audits.
• Actively participate in continuous professional development.
• Provide support to hospital management to maintain efficient patient care and service standards.
• Comply with the Performance Management and Development System, including quarterly reviews and final assessment.

Requirements

• Appropriate qualifications that allow registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology (2026).
• A valid work permit is required for non-South Africans.

Grade 1 Experience Requirement

• No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Independent Practice.
• Foreign-qualified employees require a minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign professional body and/or the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology.
