Job Description

The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting applications for the Porter (Level 2) position at Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital. This role is suited to candidates who can support patient movement, hospital transport services, and general porter duties in a busy healthcare environment.

The successful candidates will help ensure that patients, documents, and equipment are moved safely and efficiently across the hospital. This is a practical support role for someone who can work well under pressure, communicate clearly, and operate effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Assist with loading patients in and out of ambulances and private vehicles
• Accompany walking and non-walking patients from reception or casualty to wards and other service points
• Transport patients using wheelchairs and stretchers
• Help nursing staff transfer patients to other wards
• Carry patients’ medical documentation to wards and other service points
• Collect corpses from wards and transport them to the mortuary
• Load corpses into mortuary shelves
• Clean porter equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers
• Report broken wheelchairs and stretchers
• Take care of porter equipment to ensure it remains usable and safe

Requirements

• Grade 10 / AET Level 4 certificate or equivalent qualification
• Must be able to read and write
• 1 year of porter experience in a hospital environment will be an added advantage
• Good communication skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Must be prepared to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
• Understanding of Batho Pele Principles
• Ability to work effectively in a team
• Ability to work under pressure
