Job Description
The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting applications for Porter positions within the Patient Affairs Directorate at Pholosong Regional Hospital.
The successful candidates will assist with the safe movement and support of patients within the hospital. Duties include helping patients who are unable to walk, transporting patients to and from wards and departments, preparing wheelchairs and stretchers, assisting with patient transfers, recording transported patients, and supporting hospital service delivery.
This role is suitable for reliable and self-motivated candidates who can work under pressure, communicate well, handle confidential information, and provide respectful customer service in a healthcare environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients who are unable to walk to and from private vehicles.
- Accompany walking and non-walking patients within the hospital.
- Transport patients to and from relevant wards and departments.
- Keep close observation of patients while escorting them.
- Receive patients from ambulances or vehicles using stretchers or wheelchairs in the presence of a healthcare professional.
- Assist with transferring patients to beds, trolleys, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
- Ensure wheelchairs and stretchers are cleaned and ready for use.
- Check wheelchairs and stretchers to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Report faulty equipment to the supervisor.
- Keep inventory records up to date.
- Collect stretchers and wheelchairs daily.
- Lay stretchers daily.
- Record and register all patients transported on daily production sheets.
- Submit daily transport records to the supervisor.
- Relieve in other areas when requested by the supervisor.
- Rotate within the scope of work when required.
- Wear a name tag or hospital ID daily.
- Attend training courses arranged by Human Resources or the section.
- Attend sectional meetings.
- Adhere to Batho Pele Principles.
- Treat patients, clients, and colleagues with dignity and respect.
- Follow portering service policies and procedures.
- Follow legal instructions given by senior staff members.
- Adhere to timelines and time management requirements.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

- Assist with transporting deceased patients from wards to the mortuary.
- Enter admissions in the admission book.
- Check availability of oxygen cylinders daily.
- Support patient safety and attendance register compliance.
- Comply with the departmental quality improvement plan.
Requirements
- Grade 10 to Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- No experience required.
- Basic understanding of Batho Pele Principles.
- Basic understanding of the Patients’ Rights Charter.
- Basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety.
- Ability to work under pressure.
