Job Description
The Office of the Chief Justice is inviting applications for a Security Officer position at the KwaZulu-Natal Local Division of the High Court in Durban.
The successful candidate will be responsible for protecting the court premises, controlling access, monitoring security systems, reporting security breaches, inspecting vehicles, managing visitor access, patrolling the building, and ensuring that security procedures are followed.
This opportunity is suitable for candidates with Grade 10 / ABET Level 3, a valid Grade C PSIRA certificate, and at least 1 year of experience in the security industry.

Responsibilities
- Perform access control duties.
- Determine whether visitors have appointments or require specific services.
- Contact relevant employees to confirm appointments.
- Refer visitors to the correct service delivery point.
- Ensure the admission control register is completed.
- Issue admission control documents or cards where required.
- Use walk-through metal detectors to support effective access control.
- Prevent unauthorised persons and dangerous objects from entering the building.
- Report security breaches and non-compliance to the Supervisor.
- Ensure equipment, documents, and stores do not leave or enter the building without authorisation.
- Ensure registers for movement of equipment, stores, and documents are completed.
- Inspect vehicles entering and leaving the premises.
- Gather information and report missing or stolen equipment and stores.
- Handle documents at points of entry according to classification and security prescripts.
- Operate control room security equipment.
- Monitor movements, events, and activities using CCTV equipment.
- Ensure security systems are in good working condition.
- Report all monitored incidents to the Supervisor.
- Monitor access points for effective access control.
- Report non-compliance with security policies and procedures.
- Undertake building and premises patrols.
- Apply emergency procedures during situations such as bomb scares or riots.
- Alert emergency services and departmental management when required.
- Monitor and respond to alarm systems.
- Record incidents in occurrence books or registers.
- Ensure recorded information is accurate.
- Update occurrence books or registers when required.
- Liaise with the Supervisor to verify recorded information.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Court Manager.
Requirements
- Grade 10 / ABET Level 3 or equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA.
- Basic Security Officer’s course.
- At least Grade C with a valid PSIRA certificate.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in the security industry.
- Valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
- Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a pre-entry practical exercise.
- Knowledge of the Access to Public Premises and Vehicles Act.
- Knowledge of security-related legislation.
