Rio Tinto is inviting applications for the 2026 Artisan Learnership Programme in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Artisan Learnership Programme is a structured occupationally directed training opportunity that leads to a trade-related qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Upon successful completion of the programme, learners will receive a Trade Certificate issued by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

This accredited programme combines theoretical learning, practical training, and workplace-based learning to help learners develop industry-aligned technical skills.

Available Trades

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates interested in pursuing careers in the following occupational trade certificates:

• Diesel Mechanic
• Boiler Maker
• Millwright
• Refractory Mason
• Electrician
• Mechanical Fitter
• Instrumentation

Responsibilities

• Participate in theoretical learning and practical training.
• Complete work-based learning components as required by the programme.
• Develop trade-related technical skills aligned to industry requirements.
• Follow safety procedures, workplace instructions, and training requirements.
• Attend training sessions and complete assessments.
• Gain practical exposure in the selected occupational trade.
• Work towards successful completion of the learnership and trade certification.

Requirements

• Must be a South African citizen.
• Must be an unemployed youth.
• Must have successfully completed Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics (Core Mathematics) and Physical Science, or Technical Matric.
• Must have a trade-related qualification.
• Must have a South African driver’s licence, minimum Code B.
• Must not be registered on an active learnership or apprenticeship funded by a SETA or privately.
• Must have a domicile address within the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.
