About the Opportunity

The Department of Health is inviting applications for four Radiation Oncology Radiographer / Radiotherapist posts.

These posts are based at the eThekwini Oncology Complex, covering Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and Addington Hospital. The successful candidates will perform radiotherapy planning, treatment preparation, brachytherapy procedures, patient care support, treatment record keeping and related radiation oncology duties.

Salary

• Grade 1: R510 906 per annum
• Grade 2: R598 260 per annum
• Grade 3: R703 785 per annum

Benefits may include a 13th cheque, optional medical aid and housing allowance, subject to the employee meeting the prescribed requirements.

Responsibilities

• Undertake basic radiation planning and treatment preparation.
• Perform tumour localisation.
• Conduct graphic planning.
• Perform radiation dose calculations.
• Prepare necessary treatment data for treatment accessory construction.
• Undertake brachytherapy planning and treatment procedures.
• Liaise with the Physicist, Oncologist, Oncology nurses, relatives and patients.
• Safely operate and care for accessories and immobilisation devices used in patient planning and treatment.
• Construct accessories and immobilisation devices used in planning and treatment.
• Perform dosimetry checks before delivery of treatment.
• Ensure accurate records are kept for the course of radiotherapy treatment delivered.
• Serve as Health and Safety Representative.
• Provide after-hours duties when required.
• Rotate between Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital Radiotherapy Department and Addington Hospital Radiotherapy Department when needed.

Minimum Requirements

• Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Radiography
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Radiographer in Oncology
• Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Radiographer in Radiotherapy Oncology

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

• Knowledge of radiotherapy standard techniques
• Knowledge of dose protocols
• Knowledge of radiotherapy equipment and accessories linked to relevant techniques
• Knowledge of specialised radiotherapy techniques
• Knowledge of basic quality assurance in Radiotherapy
• Knowledge of radiation effects
• Knowledge of radiation protection for patients
• Understanding of anatomy, tumour treatment and effects on physiology care patterns for patients
• Ability to take and evaluate portal images, CT scans and MRI scans for treatment planning purposes
• Knowledge of radiotherapy planning
• Good interpersonal skills
• Basic supervisory skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team
• Knowledge of basic patient care
